5 Things You Can Do to Trust Your Intuition and Make Better Life Decisions
As an intuitive reader, I interact with hundreds of clients in readings and there are two types of people: those who seek guidance on a situation they feel is out of their control (love/relationships, career/work situations, etc.), and those who are completely open to any guidance that is for their highest good.
The clients who are the most open to guidance for their highest good find that no matter what situation they’re asking about, if they use their intuition, they are the best person to resolve their own situation. I’m simply there as a guide to help them navigate to that resolution with reliable advice from my or their Spirit Guides.
How does this help you? The more you’re in tune with your energy, are self-aware, and your connection to your spiritual network (God/god, Spirit Guides, angels, etc.), the better your intuition will become. Being able to trust your intuition is the best way to invest back into yourself and master the art of freeing yourself from other people’s opinions, their blocks and restrictions on your dreams/plans, and creating a path to ultimately living your best life.
Here are 5 things you can do to fine-tune your intuition:
- Retreat from the World
Winter time is the best season to be in hermit mode. Almost no one is excited about getting out and about in the cold. It’s a societal norm to spend more time indoors and that works perfectly for you to spend this time getting to know yourself.
Make a commitment to not make weekend plans for a month and stay to yourself as much as possible. Who are you when you’re not around your friends, family, or at work? Do you feel more aligned with your own decisions because you’re not being influenced by others? If you’re married, in connection, or have roommates, is there a quiet space that you can retreat to, perhaps the bathroom or library? Start to journal and notice how you have changed over time. Make small decisions like whether to ask others for advice on a matter and handle it yourself. What was the outcome?
Take a social media break. You don’t have to delete your profile, but delete the apps on your phone for a month so that you’re not tempted to click on the apps. Social media has had many positive effects on our lives, especially staying connected during the pandemic, but it can also make you anxious, harbor cyber bullies, and generally invite opinions about our lives if we overshare. At a minimum, stay out of the comments sections of others’ or news media social media posts! Nothing good happens there and it reminds you of how many unhealed people there are in the world.
2. Center Yourself/Ground Your Energy
Before making a decision or taking actions, get into the habit of centering yourself. When you find yourself over-giving to others or sending your energy outside of yourself, redirect it back to you. This may feel like you wanting to make a decision quickly because you’re anxious about the outcome. The antidote to that impulsive action may be to give yourself the time to think about it first. You can sleep on it, you can refocus your attention on a chore like washing dishes, doing laundry, or grocery shopping, or meditate and visualize you putting your energy back into yourself.
You can also practice grounding your energy. There are several ways to ground your energy, from putting your bare feet in the Earth, sand, or on wood, to visualizing roots coming out of your feet and going into the ground and connecting to the Earth or trees. I live in nature surrounded by oak trees and I can tell you that it is a very powerful practice to reach out to the trees for support.
3. Love/Self-Love
Unfortunately, the biggest block to trusting your own intuition is feelings of rejection in the past. Some people may have felt rejected as early as childhood, whether it was from their first family, at school, or later in life in romantic relationships. These feelings of rejection leave a scar that, if left unhealed, can turn into feelings of abandonment, negative patterns in relationships, and lack of trust in their own intuition and the decisions that they make.
Taking the month off to retreat from the world will help you identify the Takers or Energy Vampires in your life. If your intuition has always felt off around certain people, places or things, trust it. Make a list and remove those people and situations from your life for that month and see how you feel. This is the biggest test in trusting your intuition. If you see that removing those people and environments from your life makes you feel more stable in your energy, then you’re already taking a step closer to trusting your intuition.
If you decide to allow those people back into your life, set firm boundaries, expect reciprocation of your energy and respect. Self–love is being okay with people walking away from your life because they don’t respect your boundaries. Then you’ll feel better about trusting your intuition and removing them from your life once and for all. Any connection that doesn’t add value to your life, is taking from it.
4. Fear/Courage
Many of us don’t follow our intuition because we fear the outcome or other people’s judgments. Fear creates blocks on your ability to move forward in life and make you feel stuck or stagnant. Fear is not a part of your intuition, it is a part of your Ego trying to protect you from something it doesn’t have experience being successful at. Fear can block you from taking actions that benefit you because you may feel unsupported or simply don’t know what needs to be done. The more you have courage to step into the unknown, anchored by good practices in improving your intuition, the more you’ll make better life and love decisions.
5. Optional: Have/Develop a Belief System
Many people have found that religion or adopting a spiritual belief system helps them navigate life with more certainty. Some people participate in formal religious practices like going to church or temple, others study many religions or spiritual beliefs and develop their own spiritual belief system and practices. Either way, this is a very good way to trust your intuition. Throughout the process of getting to know yourself through a belief system, it naturally helps you develop your own intuition. There are many spiritual and religious paths, so explore this aspect of yourself to see how it can support you on your journey.
If you don’t rely on your intuition, you can be easily led or confused by any new knowledge you receive when trying to make good decisions in your life, love or career. In the end, spiritual advisors are like Yoda when you need a tune-up or adjustment in your energy, when there are new lessons to learn or assistance in identifying repeating patterns in your love life, career/finance matters, or soul development.
