Whether you’re in a relationship, in a situationship, or single and ready to mingle, Valentine’s Day season can trigger anxiety about your relationship status. For those in relationships, you’re not excluded from these anxieties. Feminines may be concerned about their Masculine’s (or vice versa) plans for Valentine’s Day or lack thereof, those in situationship may feel like their partners may ghost them, and singles may be anxious about finding someone to even have coffee with.

This blog post isn’t about anxiety or desperation, it’s about reminding ourselves that we can control our healing journey and have fun while doing it, but most importantly, that our happiness is not dependent on the actions of those external to ourselves.

Here are 6 fun and healing tips to get you through this Valentine’s Day season. (Yes, it’s a season because we spend the month worrying about what’s to come in our romantic lives.)

Spread the Love: For some of us, giving to and making others feel special is a great way to receive love too. Just the thought of someone (mom/best friend/stranger) on the receiving end of your gifts during this season is enough. Send Valentine’s Day cards to mom or people in your life who you know are heartbroken. Maybe you have a friend or family member who is a single parent who is exhausted from child rearing and would love to be appreciated. This might look like having movie night with them and the kid(s), babysitting so that they can go out and take care of themselves, or randomly sending them a bouquet of flowers. Sometimes giving to others makes us feel like little Cupids spreading love and joy to others.

Treat Yourself: There are tons of budget-friendly ways to practice self-care that won’t break the bank. Buy yourself nail polish and do your own nails, find an at-home facial kit, and buy yourself the most beautiful bouquet of fragrant flowers and chocolates you can find. At the end of the day, Valentine’s Day is just one day of the month that we freak out about. Make a plan for that day to serve yourself. For those who can afford a full spa day, get a pedicure, manicure, massage, and/or facial on or around Valentine’s Day. Get on top of those reservations now to avoid the crush. Check out my Medium post for more tips.

Write a Letter to Yourself: Buy a pack of sticky notes and write yourself self-love messages the night before and post them on your mirror, fridge, computer or TV screen. When you wake up on Valentine’s Day, you’ll be reminded of just how fortunate you are to be alive another day and that self-love is the most important love of all. You can also write a letter to yourself on FutureMe.org to have it delivered to you by email on Valentine’s Day.

Staycation: Love up on yourself at home. Buy a bottle of your favorite alcoholic beverage, hot chocolate or tea, turn on some soothing music, run a hot bubble or salt bath with flower petals and candles. Watch a romcom, fantasy or action movie afterwards to round out the night. Whatever you do, make yourself feel special. If budget is a concern, you’d be surprised how much of these items can be found at your local dollar store.

Galentine’s/Malentine’s Day: Spend the day or night with your friends. There are so many activities catered to friends enjoying the day of love out and about, but get to making reservations and plans now, because these activities are becoming more and more popular. You can also host your friends at your home and dance the night away or make it a movie night. Do what feels good to you and your squad.

Get on a Dating App: Many dating apps are already advertising ways for singles to connect for one-off or long-term meetups on Valentine’s Day. Don’t knock it until you try it, but be safe!

Don’t let Valentine’s Day get you down. There are so many ways to celebrate the day, and for some, month, of love. Share your own tips in the comments section.
